"miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see." - C.S. Lewis
it wasn't until i was tying on my sneakers that i realized i'd left my bottle of water at home. well, crap, apparently my run wasn't going to be as refreshing as i'd hoped. five minutes later, i was fighting rebound-thrist from a HUGE cup of good-morning-coffee and starting to really wish i had my nalgene. oh, my huge, clean nalgene bottle, full of cool thrist-quenching water. i would have paid much more than it was worth to have it in my hand just then.
i didn't even pray about it. God doesn't care about silly things that are my own (damn) fault.
right?
the 76ers were leaving their office, heading up to practice, and one of those gigantic black men strided over to my treadmill, one hand behind his back. smiling down at me, he slid a dripping wet bottle of spring water into the previously empty drink holder. no words. turned around and walked away. my need = fulfilled.
so there are a hundred more important needs in my life than just wishing i had a drink on hand. i pray for them all the time. mainly, i pray about david. i pray about my future specialty as a doctor (as in, what the heck kind of a doctor do i want to be??). i pray about the healthcare situation in pennsylvania, where my family lives and i'd like to stay for a while, too. i pray for my family, for my brother's illness, for the protection of my sister's heart as she navigates a fifteen-year-old's world of insecurities. i don't pray for water, but God gives it to me unprompted, because that's the kind of God he is. he shows his hand in smaller stories so that we remember who he is in the larger stories, where things are not so simple and it's harder to see that his hand is still working on our behalf. AND - he just loves us. he loves us so much. i know he loves giving to us in those little ways, and i bet he loves it even more when we notice. so today, point taken. God is taking care of me, and here is my thanks.
