sneaking out

no matter how small the movements, no matter how slowly i slide my legs through the sheets, i can never get out of bed without my husband giving out a huge yawn, rolling over, smiling at me. this is incredible at 5am when i get up for work. he has no reason to be up then, but by the time i am out of the shower i can smell coffee brewing, or i can hear my car being warmed on the road. given that he works from home and wouldn't actually have to roll out of bed until hours later, well, it's sort of shocking to me every time it happens, which has now been for the better part of two years. i know that i am very, very loved.

other times, though, it might be nice to sneak out of bed successfully. mornings on average are intensely better now that i am married, but sometimes i miss having those quiet hours to myself. there is something amazing about getting to notice your own thoughts before anything else has the chance to get to them.

i don't know what happened today. i have the day off, and i rolled out of bed, and my husband didn't move. he is sleeping like a baby. i was astonished for a minute, checked to make sure he was breathing, and then flipped open my laptop.

it is a good day.
